19th November 2021

Alcohol Awareness Week takes place this year between Monday 15th – Sunday 21st November 2021. Throughout this week, organisations all over the United Kingdom share and spread awareness about the short and long-term effects of alcoholism.

The truth about alcoholism is that it can negatively impact different aspects of an individual's life, including employment, work, physical and mental health. However, this year's theme of Alcohol Awareness Week is alcohol & relationships.

Generally, alcohol can be used as a way for adults/families to celebrate certain occasions. However, this can quickly turn difficult and problematic when drinking to excess is apparent, causing tension & anxiety. In addition, all types of relationships, whether big or small, free or committed, or titled as friend, family or partner, can be affected by alcoholism.

Alcoholism can be dangerous and can be distressing to the relationships around them. The unexpected behaviours that can come from excessive drinking include verbal abuse, physical abuse, driving under the influence, disappearing & many more. These behaviours witnessed can cause hurt and disappointment to adults & children alike.

At times, we don't pause and think about the amount of alcohol we're consuming and how it makes others around us feel. Also, if our drinking is not as fun or exciting for others as it is for us? Asking questions draws a new perspective and helps us make better choices and decisions. There is a life to enjoy without alcohol; at The Living Room, we're here to help every step of the way.

Alcohol can also have a serious impact on your physical and mental health. Here are some facts you may not know about alcoholism:

Thomas Fuller is an English historian who has numerous quotes from 1600’s that reflect modern times' truth. A quote he's well known for is "Wine hath drowned more men than the sea". The startling part about this quote is that it is entirely accurate. The World Health Organisation has found out that 3 million deaths each year result from the harmful use of alcohol, representing 5.3% of all deaths globally. Compared to an estimate of 236,000 drowning deaths worldwide. You can find out more about the impact of alcohol in our infographic.
